Three-Phase Smart Meter Buying Guide

A smart meter is useful only when its wiring, CT arrangement, accuracy, communication and data destination match the electrical system. Start with the measurement architecture, not the display.

Short answer: Confirm three-phase three-wire or four-wire arrangement, nominal voltage, direct or CT-operated current measurement, frequency, earthing and installation location.

Direct measurement or current transformers

Direct meters are limited by their rated current. CT-operated systems require correct CT ratio, polarity, phase mapping and secondary wiring. A meter can display plausible but wrong data when a CT is installed incorrectly.

Accuracy and data are separate requirements

Energy management, internal allocation and billing can require different accuracy and approval requirements. State the intended use, measurement interval, data retention and whether the readings are operational or revenue-related.

Communication must fit the site

WiFi and RS485 are different communication paths. Confirm protocol, address plan, gateway, cable route, cybersecurity requirements and the destination platform before ordering.

Commissioning is part of the purchase

Verify phase sequence, CT direction, voltage inputs, ratio settings, register units and communications after installation. Keep a commissioning record.

Can I use a smart meter without CTs?

Only when the system current is within the meter’s direct-measurement rating and the wiring arrangement is supported.

Is WiFi better than RS485?

Neither is automatically better. WiFi can suit accessible wireless networks; RS485 can suit wired industrial communications. Confirm the complete site architecture.
