Commercial Pressure Washer Buying Guide

Pressure matters, but it does not tell you how quickly a machine can rinse away loosened soil, how long the pump can work, or whether the electrical and water supply at your site can support it.

Short answer: choose a commercial pressure washer by matching pressure and water flow to the surface and soil, then check pump construction, motor speed, expected working periods, power supply, inlet water and accessory ratings. A high pressure figure on its own is not a complete measure of cleaning performance.

Start with the cleaning task, not the largest number

A detailing shop removing road film does not have the same requirement as a maintenance team cleaning dried mud from a loader. Both may use a pressure washer, but the useful nozzle, working distance, water flow and operating pattern will differ.

Write down the surface, soil, daily cleaning hours and available utilities before comparing machines. This prevents a common buying error: selecting by advertised maximum pressure and discovering later that the site cannot feed the machine with enough water.

Pressure loosens soil. Flow carries it away.

Pressure is commonly shown in bar, megapascals or pounds per square inch. Water flow is shown in litres per minute or gallons per minute. Pressure contributes to the force of the jet at the surface. Flow controls how much water is available to move loosened dirt, foam and debris away from the work area.

For reference, 1 MPa equals 10 bar, and 150 bar is about 2,176 PSI. Twelve litres per minute is about 3.17 US gallons per minute. Converted units should be treated as the same operating point, not as additional specifications.

What can a 150 bar, 12 L/min machine clean?

A correctly configured 150 bar machine with 12 L/min flow can be used for professional vehicle washing, fleet cleaning, machinery maintenance and many durable hard-surface jobs. The result still depends on the nozzle, working distance, detergent, water temperature, deposit and surface condition.

The Geararo GAT12 electric pressure washer publishes a working point of 150 bar and 12 L/min with a 2.5 kW, 1,450 RPM motor. Those figures make it a useful reference for this class of commercial machine. They do not mean every surface should be cleaned at full pressure.

Surface warning: reduce pressure, increase working distance and test a small area before cleaning painted panels, old concrete, timber, labels, seals or coated surfaces. Do not direct a high-pressure jet at people, electrical equipment, bearings or components that can admit water.

Triplex plunger pump or lighter-duty pump?

A triplex pump uses three plungers driven by a crankshaft. Valves control inlet and discharge flow as the plungers move. Commercial buyers often consider this construction because seals, valves and pump oil can be inspected as part of a planned maintenance routine.

Axial or wobble-plate pump arrangements can be compact and economical. They are common where portability, lower initial cost and shorter cleaning periods matter more than service access. The pump name alone does not prove lifespan. Materials, rotational speed, cooling, lubrication, water quality, unloading control and actual working pattern all affect wear.

Why motor speed belongs in the comparison

Motor and pump speed influence noise, heat generation, pump displacement and component loading. A 1,450 RPM motor is commonly paired with a lower-speed commercial pump arrangement on 50 Hz electrical systems. Faster direct-drive arrangements can make a machine smaller and less expensive, but the operating pattern and cooling design become especially important.

Do not translate “low RPM” into an unlimited-duty claim. Ask how long the machine may run under the expected ambient temperature, inlet-water temperature and pressure setting. A clear operating schedule is more useful than a vague statement such as “heavy duty.”

What does duty cycle mean for a pressure washer?

For purchasing, ask for a written operating pattern: the permitted continuous running time, required cooling or rest period, ambient-temperature limit, inlet-water-temperature limit, and whether time in bypass with the trigger closed counts toward the limit. Compare machines using the same work pattern instead of relying on an undefined “continuous” or “heavy-duty” label.

Check the site before the machine arrives

Electrical supply

Confirm voltage, frequency, phase, plug, cable length, circuit protection, grounding and local electrical requirements. A 220 V / 50 Hz machine should not be assumed suitable for every 220–240 V market without checking the complete electrical configuration.

Inlet water

The supply must meet the required flow without starving the pump. Check hose bore, tap capacity, inlet pressure, tank arrangement and water cleanliness. If sand or visible debris is possible, a compatible water inlet filter may be required. A filter that is too small or blocked can also restrict the pump, so flow capacity matters.

Drainage and runoff

Vehicle oil, grease, detergent and industrial soil may require collection or treatment. Confirm the local rules before washing equipment outdoors or near stormwater drainage.

Select accessories as part of the system

Every hose, gun, lance, coupler, nozzle and foam cannon must be suitable for the system pressure, flow, temperature and connection type. Similar-looking fittings are not proof of compatibility.

  • Hoses: compare working pressure, burst rating, internal diameter, length, fittings and bend condition. A 20 m hose creates more friction than a similar 10 m hose.
  • Gun and lance: confirm inlet and outlet interfaces, rated pressure, trigger protection and maximum water temperature. The gun, hose and coupler compatibility guide lists the measurements needed.
  • Pressure control: a compatible regulator valve and correctly ranged pressure gauge help technicians inspect system operation. They must match the pump and manifold.

Information to prepare before requesting a quotation

  1. Objects and surfaces to be cleaned.
  2. Typical soil: dust, mud, road film, oil, grease, scale or coating.
  3. Expected operating hours per day and length of each cleaning session.
  4. Available voltage, frequency, phase and plug or hard-wiring requirement.
  5. Available inlet-water flow, pressure and water quality.
  6. Required hose length and working radius.
  7. Needed foam, gun, lance, nozzle and surface-cleaning accessories.
  8. Destination, certification, documentation and OEM requirements.

This information allows the machine and its supporting items to be reviewed together. It also reduces the risk of receiving a pump with the wrong electrical supply, a hose with insufficient pressure rating or accessories with incompatible threads.

Frequently asked questions

Is 150 bar enough for commercial cleaning?

It can cover vehicle washing, fleet maintenance and many hard-surface jobs when paired with adequate flow and the correct nozzle. The safe pressure depends on the surface.

Is PSI or water flow more important?

Pressure loosens bonded soil; flow carries it away. Compare both at the normal working point.

Can a commercial pressure washer run continuously?

Only if the manufacturer states an operating pattern that covers the intended work. Pump type alone does not establish an unlimited duty cycle.

Does a longer hose reduce pressure?

It adds friction loss. Internal diameter, flow, fittings and hose condition determine whether the loss is noticeable.

Which nozzle is suitable for vehicle cleaning?

A wider fan nozzle used at a controlled distance is generally safer than a concentrated zero-degree jet. Always consider paint and trim condition.

What should be checked before connecting a foam cannon?

Confirm the quick connector, orifice, allowable pressure, flow range, detergent compatibility and bottle condition.
